These letters are the most commonly mixed up. Focus on the starting point — that is usually where confusion begins.
b and d — b starts with a line down, then a bump to the right. d starts with a curve around, then a line down. Say: "b bumps forward. d digs back."
p and q — p starts with a line down, then a bump to the right. q starts with a curve around, then a line down with a curve up at the end. Say: "p goes down and bumps. q goes around and digs."
n and u — n starts at the top with a line down, then curves over and down. u starts at the top, curves down and back up, then down again. Say: "n makes a hump. u makes a cup."
m and w — m has humps on top, w has points on the bottom. Say: "m sits on the line. w hangs from the line."
i and j — both have dots but j has a tail that curves left. Say: "i stands straight. j swings left and gets a dot too."
v and w — v is one valley, w is two valleys. Say: "v dips once. w dips twice."
