Main Idea and Key Details
A text gives you many details. Your job is to discover the one big idea holding them together.
What your brain is learning
Find the big idea.
The main idea tells what the text is mostly about. Key details explain, describe, or prove that idea. Ask, “What do these details have in common?”
Here is what to do right now
Use one clear thinking routine.
Name the topic
Say who or what the text is about.
Gather key details
Choose two or three details that matter most.
Build the main idea
Put the topic and the most important point into one sentence.

Read, notice, and think.
Bees visit flowers to collect nectar.
