If you have ever felt buried under reading apps, flashcards, and worksheets, you are not alone. The problem is rarely that a family needs more materials. The problem is knowing which skill to work on next.
Reading is a team of skills
A child is coordinating sounds, letters, blending, meaning, and memory every time they read. Those skills do not always grow at the same speed. A child may know many letter names but still struggle to blend sounds. Another may read the words correctly but lose the meaning of the sentence.
That is why “reading is hard” is not a diagnosis. It is the beginning of a better question: Which part is hard?
A struggle is a clue
When a child guesses, pauses, forgets, or avoids a word, their brain is showing us where the work is. We can use that information without turning it into a judgment.
- Land of Letters: hearing sounds and connecting them to letters.
- Land of Words: blending sounds and noticing word patterns.
- Book Journeys: reading longer text while holding onto meaning.
- Character Compass: thinking closely about language, choices, and ideas.
Every child enters this path in a different place. The goal is not to rush through the map. It is to find the next useful stop.
What to notice today
Listen to your child read one short part. When the work gets hard, notice exactly what happens. Do they lose the sounds, the word, the sentence, or the meaning? That one observation is more useful than another stack of worksheets.
